Insurance Insights: Do you work at home?
If you run your own business from your home, you should not expect that your homeowners policy will cover a claim if a delivery person slips at your door or if your inventory were to sustain damage. While a homeowners policy may provide some coverage, it is generally capped at $2,500 for business property, and that does not include liability coverage. An incidental business endorsement to a homeowners policy is available, but it usually makes more sense for home-based workers to purchase a separate business owner’s policy that includes both property and liability coverage. For more comprehensive coverage, you will want to purchase a “BOP” (business owners policy), which is a step up from an in-home business policy.
