Fall Sports and Your Family’s Health

Fall sport sign ups are underway all over New York.  Teams are getting ready for their first games by practicing and running drills.  Have your kids signed up for sports this fall?  Sports are truly a great way to keep a family active and have a lot of fun while doing it.

Childhood obesity rates are skyrocketing lately.  America’s youth is slowly becoming more and more at risk of developing diabetes and other health problems related to being overweight.  It is important as parents to show children the right way to a healthy lifestyle.  Having your children sign up for a fall sport is the perfect way to help get them on the right track.

It is recommended that children have at least 60 minutes of exercise a day.  When you think about it, that is really not too much time.  But to kids today, it’s almost an eternity.  When we were kids, running around was second nature.  These days it is not as easy to let kids go outside and just ride their bikes until dinner.  We have to find the time and schedule it in for exercise.  As silly as it may seem, it will really help.

Signing up for soccer or football is a perfect way to get that schedule going.  Practices for sports usually last an hour or so.  Games are about the same.  If practice is every other day with games on the weekend, that will give the kids at least 4 days of guaranteed exercise each week.  On those off days, how about going for a long family bike ride?  Or taking the kids on a nature hike.  Anything to keep their blood pumping for an hour every day.  Your kids (and you) will be on the right track in no time at all.
